If a quirky and challenging investment is what you're after look no further than this old book shop which comes with a large maisonette
An old book shop is heading to auction and the winning bidder will get all of the books inside. 32 Broad Street in the heart of Blaenavon, still filled with hundreds of books, comes with a two-storey maisonette above the shop and has a guide price at £75,000-plus.
Paul Fosh Auctions said book-loving investors with a passion for tourism linked to the quirky town's wealth of industrial history are already being attracted by the property, which goes to auction from Tuesday, March 7 to Thursday, March 9.
Debra Bisley, from Paul Fosh Auctions, said the winning bidder could “take advantage of the history that abounds in the area”. Blaenavon optimistically launched as a book town as part of the Booktown International group to rival Hay on Wye in 2003 and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Debra said there could be opportunities to convert the property for retail tourism or for use as holiday accommodation.
“We’ve already had interest from people intrigued by the area which is steeped in history from the dawn of the industrial revolution at the start of the 18th century, while others recognise the opportunities there are for exploiting the potential for these and other properties in this World Heritage town," Debra explained.
“Located on the ground floor is the two-room book shop. The top two floors make up a three-bedroom maisonette which can be accessed via the shop or via the entrance to the rear of the property. Additionally there is a head-height basement and a large attic.”
The former book shop, which closed in 2021, is a stone’s throw from Blaenavon Ironworks, the Heritage Railway, the World Heritage Centre and the Big Pit. Blaenafon Cheddar Co, which matures its cheeses in the former pit, is also located on Broad Street and attracts hordes of tourists to the area.
